Brief Description: The Eric Watkins Papers (1950-2012) document Dr. Watkins's career as a freelance journalist covering the oil industry, politics, and terrorism, in Saudi Arabia and Yemen during the 1980s-1990s, but also including material on Eritrea, Sudan, and the Middle East in general. The collection includes a wide range of materials, including correspondence, draft and published articles, interview notes, conference papers, contracts, book reviews, newspapers and news clippings, notebooks, photographs, computer discs, and audiovisual recordings. Notably, the collection includes a complete set of Yemen News Service (YNS) and YNS Weekender, a daily news bulletin compiled by Dr. Watkins. The collection also includes a large collection of articles by Watkins appearing in journals such as the Financial Times, Oil and Gas Journal (OGJ), Shipping and Trade News. The collection’s audiovisual records include interviews conducted by Watkins, recordings of radio programs, and TV news programs on Yemen, Sudan, and Eritrea. Dr. Watkins’s academic career at the University of California San Diego is documented by a series of files including his PhD dissertation, The Authorial Allusion (1984).
