Biographical Note

Evelyn Elizabeth Lockman, professor of dance at San Diego State University from 1948-1977, was instrumental in establishing the dance major at SDSU. Lockman was an internationally known dancer and choreographer, who promoted dance arts, and received many awards for her performances and teaching.

She was born in Bolivar, Tennesse and began her dance career at an early age. She graduated with an undergraduate in English Literature from Vanderbilt University and a master's degree in Physical Education from the George Peabody College for Teachers. She continued teaching in New York, Bowling Green University in Ohio, University of Southwestern Louisiana as chair of the dance department, and eventually at San Diego State University in 1977. She was later approved for full professorship at SDSU after completing her dissertation, "A Manual on the Teaching of Creative Dance" and retired from academia.

Lockman was deeply committed to reviving and advocating for international dance forms, spending time educating and performing in Bolivia, China, India, Thailand, and Korea. Even after her retirement, she continued teaching mainly in the international dance areas. She was very involved with the International Dance Association and World Congress of the the International Society for Education through Art. She also was appointed to the dance commitee for the Asian Games and the Korean Olympic Committee for the 1986 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.

The National Dance Association reorganized in the 1970s and Lockman became the first president of the organization. She initiated the publication of the newsletter, "Spotlight on Dance." Because of her many achievements abroad, she was recognized by the National Dance Association with the 23rd Heritage Honoree award in 1986. Her accomplishments and mentoring were also celebrated in the town of Lafayette, Louisiana, as the mayor of Lafayette proclaimed April 11th as Evelyn Lockman Day.

Evelyn Lockman died at the age of 81, in San Diego, CA on September 4, 1991.
