Collection Overview
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Marta Sánchez Papers (1953-2013) document the professional career of Dr. Sánchez and include materials created during her tenure as a professor at the University of California, San Diego. The bulk of the collection dates from 1985-2010. Materials include lecture notes, syllabi, student work, journal articles, correspondence, press clippings, book pre-publication drafts, and conference papers. The collection is divided into four series: Academic Files, Book Pre-Publication Drafts, Research and Writings, and Conference Papers.
Academic Files (1955-2013), arranged alphabetically, consist largely of annotated journal articles and lecture notes. The lecture notes highlight key passages and topical themes from the texts. The series also includes binders created for specific courses which contain research, lecture notes, class assignments, and handouts.
The Book Pre-Publication Drafts series (1997-2003) is arranged chronologically and documents six years of preparation for her book, “Shakin' Up" Race and Gender: Intercultural Connections in Puerto Rican, African American, and Chicano Narratives and Culture (1965-1995), published in 2005. Notable in this series is feedback from the writing group Sánchez consulted throughout the writing process.
Research and Writings (1953-2004) is arranged alphabetically by topic or author. The bulk of the materials consists of research related to Sánchez’s writings. The series also contains several published articles written by Sánchez.
The Conference Papers series (1995-2008) is arranged alphabetically by conference organizer. In addition to copies of Sánchez’s conference papers, this series contains her preparatory notes, research, and conference materials such as programs, schedules, and name badges. Conference topics include the Chicana/o experience, feminist readings, and Latina/o literature.
