San Diego Hunger Coalition | Special Collections & University Archives

Name: San Diego Hunger Coalition

Historical Note: The San Diego Hunger Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to and participation in federal food programs, such as food stamps and school lunch programs. The Coalition educates and advocates about hunger issues at the local, state, and national levels, with the goal of alleviating hunger in San Diego County. In 1983 the Coalition created the Hunger Survey Committee, which attempted to quantify the total number of hungry persons in San Diego County. They did so by asking people at a local soup kitchen to fill out surveys, surveying door-to-door in all neighborhoods and communities in the county, and mailing surveys to food providing agencies in the county.
