Lyric Opera San Diego (1979-2011) | Special Collections & University Archives

Name: Lyric Opera San Diego (1979-2011)

Historical Note: Lyric Opera San Diego was a theatre company devoted to comic opera, operetta and musical theatre. Founded in 1979 as the San Diego Gilbert and Sullivan Company, the company later changed its name to San Diego Comic Opera, then to Lyric Opera San Diego in 2003. A core part of the company's mission was to develop upcoming talent, and it offered educational programs to middle- and high-school students in theatre arts and production. In 2005, with help from the city and private developers, Lyric Opera bought and renovated the historic North Park Theatre on the corner of University Avenue and 29th Street. Lyric Opera struggled to pay the mortgage on the building, however, and dwindling ticket sales and donations forced the company to close in 2011.
