Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Maria Nieto Senour Papers (1943-2014) document Senour’s work at San Diego State University and in the San Diego community. The collection includes reports, correspondence, conference papers, awards, university personnel files, election campaign papers, press clippings and articles. All materials are organized alphabetically within three series: Biographical, Professional, and Collected Research.
The Biographical series (1943-2009) is divided into two sub-series: Personal Papers and Published and Unpublished Writings. The Personal Papers sub-series (1943-2009) contains awards, short biographies, correspondence, and curriculum vitaes. A framed resolution from California Senator Lucy Killea recognizing Senour as a distinguished professor at San Diego State University is also included. Published and Unpublished Writings (1977-2002) is mostly comprised of speeches given at various events but also contains a chapter published in Chicano Psychology edited by Joe L. Martinez.
The Professional series (1977-2014) is divided into two sub-series: San Diego State University and San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees. San Diego State University (1977-2014) is comprised of correspondence, meeting minutes, applications, instructor evaluations, reports, university personnel files and conference papers. Documents from the Community Based Block (CBB) Program, the Equity, Diversity, and Outreach Committee (Affirmative Action and Outreach Advisory Council), and the Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotions (RTP) Committee are included. The San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees sub-series (1990-2010) mostly contains materials from Maria Nieto Senour’s six election campaigns. Documents include promotional materials, endorsement correspondence, procedures and policies, and committee papers.
The Collected Research series (1961-1988) is organized topically. Most documents pertain to ethnic groups, especially Latinos, or types of counseling. Types of materials include journal articles, press clippings, and newsletters.
Biographical Note
Maria Nieto Senour grew up in Austin, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. She earned a Bachelors of Arts degree at Marygrove College with joint majors in Art and Education, a Masters in Education in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Toledo, and a Ph.D. in Guidance and Counseling from Wayne State University. Senour is passionate about teaching and has worked in elementary and junior high schools as an educator and counselor.
Dr. Senour became a professor in San Diego State University’s Department of Counseling and School Psychology in 1977. In that capacity, she taught courses as well as directed the Community Based Block (CBB) Program for twenty years, chaired the Affirmative Action and Outreach Advisory Council (now the Equity, Diversity, and Outreach Committee), and served on the Faculty Senate. Professor Senour’s honors and awards include the first ever SDSU Faculty Diversity Award in 2010, the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2002, and the SDSU Outstanding Professor Award in 1993, among others. Dr. Senour was also elected to the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees six times and served from 1990-2010. She was also on the San Diego Convention Center Board of Directors and was an active member of many other local organizations.
Maria Nieto Senour is married to Dennis Ollerman and has raised two children: Andrea Beth Aragoza and Jon Carlos Nieto Senour. She currently resides in San Diego.
